Event narrative

During the morning of October 3rd, Tropical Depression 23W formed just west of Wake Island. The depression became Tropical Storm Choi-wan later that same morning. Further intensification resulted in Choi-wan becoming a typhoon on the afternoon of the 6th. The typhoon passed to the northeast of the Marianas, and even though it did not pass across any local islands, swells generated by the typhoon pushed down across Guam. The long period swells from Choi-wan impacted a 25 foot boat that was trying to exit Hagatna Boat Basin on the morning of the 9th. The waves capsized the boat and sent two out of the three people using the boat to the hospital.

Wider weather episode

Typhoon Choi-wan moved across the Western North Pacific during the first half of September.
