Event narrative

A mix of heavy snow and sleet caused hazardous traveling conditions. Two fatalities were reported on Interstate 90-94 in separate automobile accidents, which were indirectly related to the poor weather conditions.

Wider weather episode

A winter storm moved from the southern plains into the Ohio Valley, producing widespread precipitation across the Midwest. In southwest and central Wisconsin, the storm was the first of the winter season, producing a mix of heavy snow and sleet much of Saturday December 1. Precipitation changed to mainly freezing drizzle or freezing rain during the evening hours, before ending in the early morning of Sunday December 2. Unusually high accumulations of sleet were measured by weather observers, with amounts of 1 to 2 inches. Specific reports included 2 inches near Holmen (La Crosse County) and 1.5 inches near West Salem (La Crosse County). Total snow and sleet accumulations generally ranged between 3 and 8 inches, with 7.5 inches reported near Hatfield (Jackson County) and 7.0 inches near Neillsville (Clark County). There was some freezing rain during the event, with ice accumulations of two tenths of an inch or less.
