Event narrative
Several people were caught and rescued in a rip current that occurred near 23rd Street in Miami Beach. A 34-year-old man from Fort Myers went into the water to rescue his wife. The woman was able to escape, but the man was pulled from the water not breathing shortly thereafter. He later died at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Wider weather episode
Strong east winds brought rough seas and rip currents to all Atlantic beaches during the day. A man drowned near Miami Beach while rescuing another person caught in a rip current.
