The San Clemente Basin Buoy reported wind gusts of 40-42 mph between 1950 and 2250PST on the 16th. The buoy also reported seas of 9-11 ft.

Strong northwesterly winds and elevated seas developed in the wake of a Pacific cold front on December 16th and 17th. The winds reached gale force for several hours on the 16th.
