What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

A tornado touched down near the airport where one hangar and two

planes were damaged. A Wal-Mart store had some skylights shattered

and parts of the roof was damaged. Neighboring strip mall stores

also received minor facade damage and a portable fireworks shop

was destroyed. Across the street, several large trees fell on homes

and several other buildings were damaged as well. The estimated peak wind was 110 MPH.

The wider storm

A moist and unstable air mass spread north from the gulf while a strong cold front pushed in from the west. A line of thunderstorms developed along the frontal boundary as it moved across the region. Several short lived tornadoes occurred along the leading edge of the squall line along with strong wind gusts.

Began near Marksville Muni Arpt (31.0967, -92.0663).
