What F1 means. This tornado was rated on Fujita’s original scale, used until 2007. F1 meant moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken; the scale paired it with winds of 73–112 mph, figures later judged too high, especially toward the top of the scale, and revised downward in the Enhanced Fujita scale. Ratings then, as now, came from the damage.

What the National Weather Service wrote

A damage survey conducted by the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Fort Worth revealed that a tornado developed just south of CR 315 and moved rapidly north-northeast. It damaged numerous trees along CR 315 and FM 107. As the tornado moved just west of Oglesby, it damaged homes and sheds along CR 303, CR 305, and CR 306. A home south of CR 306 had shingles and a portion of roof decking removed. The tornado dissipated just north of Highway 84.

The wider storm

A rare winter tornado outbreak occurred on December 29 over portions of North Texas, spawning almost two dozen tornadoes. Very high shear and low instability created an environment favorable for tornadoes. A strong surface low pressure system and warm front located in southern North Texas increased the probablitity for low-level rotation. In addition to tornadoes, severe reports of large hail and flash flooding were widespread.

Began near Oglesby (31.3893, -97.5559).
