Several trees were blown down by thunderstorm winds near River Road in West Salem.

Wider weather episode

Southerly flow around high pressure pushing off to the east provided suitable moisture into the region to cause afternoon thunderstorms to develop in the Virginia piedmont. Thunderstorms began in the North Carolina high country before progressing northeast, tapping into higher instabilities where the storms became severe.
