The Schaeffer Fire was started by lightning on June 24, 2017 in the footprint of the 2002 McNally Fire. The fire was initially allowed to burn for resources purposes, however, when the fire activity increased significantly, an Incident Command Team was assigned on July 3. The fire closed the Kern River and Western Divide ranger districts of the Sequoia National Forest for most of July. The fire burned 16,031 acres and was contained on July 31, 2017. Cost of containment was $13.1 Million.
