A 39 year old male was struck and killed by a lightning strike while taking cover from the storm under a tree in Sanford, North Carolina.

An upper level low located across the Piedmont of central North Carolina coupled with a warm moist boundary layer to produce scattered to numerous storms during the afternoon into the evening across the Western Piedmont of North Carolina. Some of these storms became severe and produce severe hail and damaging winds, along with one report of flash flooding.
