What the National Weather Service wrote

Light freezing rain changed to snow during the evening of January 3rd and accumulated 5 to 7 inches county wide by the early morning hours of January 4th. The snow and ice produced widespread hazardous travel conditions. One man died in a weather related vehicle accident. His vehicle slid off an icy road in eastern Beaufort County and ended up submerged in a ditch.

The wider storm

Rapidly deepening low pressure passing offshore of the coast produced widespread hazardous winter weather across eastern North Carolina from the evening of January 3rd through the morning of January 4th. In addition to the winter weather very strong winds occurred along the coast with minor coastal flooding along the Outer Banks. There were two weather related traffic fatalities reported, one in Onslow County and another in Beaufort County.
