Event narrative
Light rain and freezing rain changed to snow during the late evening of January 3rd and accumulated 3 to 5 inches county wide by the early morning hours of January 4th. The snow and ice produced widespread hazardous travel conditions.
Wider weather episode
Rapidly deepening low pressure passing offshore of the coast produced widespread hazardous winter weather across eastern North Carolina from the evening of January 3rd through the morning of January 4th. In addition to the winter weather very strong winds occurred along the coast with minor coastal flooding along the Outer Banks. There were two weather related traffic fatalities reported, one in Onslow County and another in Beaufort County.
