Winter Storm — Eastern Mcdowell, North Carolina
2017-12-08 · Eastern Mcdowell, North Carolina
Wider weather episode
As moisture associated with developing and strengthening low pressure over the northeast Gulf of Mexico overspread the western Carolinas, rain and snow developed over the northern North Carolina foothills through the morning, becoming all snow by late morning. As moderate to heavy snow continued through the afternoon, heavy accumulations were reported across area by mid-afternoon. Some sleet began mixing in with the snow during the evening along and south of I-40, which may have undercut total accumulations, but totals of 5-8 inches were reported by the time the snow tapered off to flurries and light snow showers around midnight. While occasional flurries and light snow showers produced locally light additional accumulations into the overnight and early daylight hours of the 9th, the accumulating snow ended in most areas by late evening on the 8th.
