The wider storm

The winter season's first strong atmospheric river moved slowly south from the Pacific Northwest coast between the 15th and the 16th before moving inland over northern California and Nevada on the 17th. The system brought high winds, significant snow, and rain to the Sierra Nevada and western Nevada.
