Event narrative
A motorist lost control of his vehicle, about 4 miles northwest of Wingate on U.S. Highway 277. His truck slid off the road and hit an oak tree. Widespread freezing fog and drizzle fell, resulting in areas of ice on area roadways and bridges.
Wider weather episode
Light freezing rain, sleet and freezing drizzle resulted in a few fatalities across West Central Texas on the morning of December 27. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, roadways became icy across the western half of the region mainly along and west of U.S. Highway 83.
