Kansas City Health Department confirmed that a homeless person died due to hypothermia. Temperatures across the area, were not considered to be extremely cold, as morning lows were in the 0 to 5 degree range, with wind chills dropping to -11 at KC International Airport.
Wider weather episode
On the morning of January 12, 2018 temperatures across Kansas City dropped to the single digits, but light northwest winds contributed to wind chill values across the city dropping to 11 degrees below zero. As a result of the cold at least one homeless person died.
