Heavy Snow — Alaska Peninsula, Alaska

2018-03-07 to 2018-03-08 · Alaska Peninsula, Alaska

Event narrative

King Salmon Weather Service Office observed 10 inches of new snow.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure system in the Aleutians brought an occluded front through the Alaska Peninsula and Bristol Bay. This combined with cold air over the mainland from a previous high pressure system caused heavy snow to fall in the Bristol Bay region. The approaching front also increased the gradient, causing winds to whip snow through the air, reducing visibility to less than one mile at times.
