Event narrative

Light freezing rain produced ice accumulations up a tenth of an inch. There were three fatalities south of Parkston, SD on state highway 37 when a teenage driver lost control on icy roads, crossed the center line and collided with a semi-truck traveling in the opposite direction.

Wider weather episode

During the morning of March 10, an approaching weak mid-level wave brought a brief pulse of warm advection. With cold temperatures at the surface and warmer temperatures aloft, a mix of precipitation types occurred during the morning and midday hours before changing over to light snow. While most snowfall was less than an inch, a narrow band of one to four inches occurred from near De Smet to Chester and Flandreau.
