Event narrative
Extensive flooding occurred from Mudlick Creek along Grandin and Garst Mill Roads with water getting into many homes. Post-flood survey indicated a recurrence interval of about 10 years (0.1 annual exceedance probability) on Mudlick Creek as the stream rose roughly 10 feet above baseflow.
Wider weather episode
Slow-moving or stationary storms during the afternoon over a small part of Roanoke County and City produced severe flash flooding mainly confined to the Mudlick Creek basin, a small tributary of the Roanoke River. Radar estimates 4 to 6 inches of rain fell across parts of the 20 square mile basin, but later rain gauge reports indicated 6 to 7+ inches fell.
