Event narrative

NOAA Buoy 42020, approximately 35 nm east-northeast of Port Mansfield, recorded a peak 3 second gust of 37 knots just before 4 AM CST April 14, as a late season cold front arrived with a line of thunderstorms that stretched from the Lower Texas coast through the Gulf up to 60 nm east.

Texas Coastal Ocean Observing Network (TCOON) location at Rincon del San Jose within the Kenedy County portion of the Laguna Madre near the Land Cut recorded a peak gust of 40 knots at 330 AM April 14th, during a one-hour period of gale force gusts as a line of strong thunderstorms crossed through the waters along a late season cold front. The gusts likely extended along the entire Laguna Madre to connect with similar observations a bit later at Realitos Peninsula, along Laguna Madre just south of Arroyo Colorado.

Wider weather episode

A late season cold front was accompanied by fast moving band of thunderstorms. Wind gusts associated with the storms reached 35 to near 45 knots from the north as they swept through; in some cases, the high gusts lasted for nearly two hours. Similar gusts continued after the storms passed, associated with the pressure gradient from high pressure building through south Texas from the north.
