The region was in an unusually warm and moist air mass with a mid-level ridge across the mid-Atlantic and an upper level trough well to the north across Hudson Bay. Surface dew points were near 70 with impressive CAPE values near 2000 J/Kg. The trigger was a subtle pre-frontal trough from upstream convection. Storms started to develop early in the afternoon along the lake breeze east of Lake Erie. These quickly expanded toward Lake Ontario and began to accelerate eastward later in the afternoon. Numerous storms displayed impressive cores aloft on radar with damaging winds following the descent of these cores.
