Wider weather episode
An arctic air mass bulged its way into the Southern Appalachian region behind a powerful low pressure system that shifted northeast from the Lower Ohio Valley through the Northeastern United States. The precipitation that occurred in the northwesterly flow behind the center of low pressure fell as snow across the Mid South. The strongest lift occurred in orographic fashion over the far Eastern Tennessee mountains bordering North Carolina. It was in this area where the greatest snowfall amounts occurred.
