Wider weather episode
An upper level trough carried cold air into the Northeast Region on January 21st. A 5200 meter height was recorded at 500mb, 850mb temperatures were -22C to -25C, and 925mb temperatures were -18C to -21C. The wind gust average throughout the area was 25mph while the ridges experienced higher gusts due to a tight pressure gradient from an exiting surface low pressure. The positioning of a building high pressure in the Midwest helped keep wind speeds west of the ridges fairly light.
