Strong west to northwest winds developed across the northern mountains of North Carolina in the wake of a cold front. Although winds became very gusty immediately after the cold front passed during the afternoon, the damaging winds primarily occurred during the evening and overnight hours, when many trees and power lines were blown down. Multiple outbuildings were also damaged or blown over and at least one tree fell on a structure in Old Fort.
