What the National Weather Service wrote

The ship American Spirit reported northeast winds at 50 mph with a peak gust of 74 mph just off the Duluth Entry during the height of the storm. The ship was unable to make it into port and attempted to anchor off Minnesota Point, but the force of the waves and winds were dragging the anchor along the bottom of the lake.

The wider storm

Two areas of low pressure moved northeastward across the Central Plains the weekend of the 18-19, keeping a tight gradient across western Lake Superior and persistent northeast winds. The second of the two lows was the stronger of the two and lead to gale force winds across western Lake Superior with a brief period of storm force winds. Winds then diminished later in the day on the 19th as the low moved away.
