What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

A tornado touched down approximately 2 miles east of Battleboro where multiple trees were snapped and uprooted. The tornado then lifted and briefly touched down not far from the Swift Creek crossing along Seven Bridges Road. The tornado continued north northeastward for a total path length of 10.57 miles, causing primarily vegetation damage in the form of intermittent uprooted and snapped trees. The tornado reached its max intensity just prior to crossing Speights Chapel Road where it directly hit a fifty year old single-wide trailer home, completely destroying it, and lofting debris from the structure for several hundred yards downstream. The home was unoccupied at the time, and the neighboring structures of similar build only received minor structural damage. The tornado continued northeastward, damaging some farm outbuildings on the north side of NC 33 before it ventured into Halifax County, only causing intermittent tree damage as it ventured into marshlands. The tornado lifted and dissipated rapidly after approaching Beech Swamp.

The wider storm

7 tornadoes and widespread damaging straight-line winds across central NC. The strongest tornado of the day in North Carolina formed in southwestern Orange County and reached EF-2 strength as it neared Hillsborough. Along its path estimated at 12 miles long and a maximum of 600 yards wide, the roof and exterior walls of one home were reported as completely destroyed.

Began near Battleboro (36.0435, -77.7097).
