What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

A NWS storm survey found damage consistent with an EF-1 tornado in the eastern portion of Baton Rouge. The tornado touched down just west of Bluebonnet Boulevard near a warehouse off of Anselmo Lane. The tornado damaged the warehouse with a few broken windows, damaged awnings, and rolled over an empty semi trailer. As the tornado moved across the property, it uprooted a large tree. The tornado crossed railroad tracks onto the Baton Rouge General Hospital grounds where it flipped over a vehicle and moved several others. Many windows were broken and exterior damage to the hospital occurred. The storm moved across Picardy Avenue toward Summa Avenue, then lifted as it hit the tree line. Maximum estimated wind 95 mph, path length 0.8 miles, path width 20 yards.

The wider storm

A stationary front along the Interstate 10-12 corridor provided the focus for the development of severe thunderstorms during the morning hours. Several tornadoes occurred over southeast Louisiana.
