What EF0 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF0 is light damage: shingles and siding peeled, gutters torn, branches broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 65–85 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

A thunderstorm produced a brief landspout about eight miles east of Marathon. The landspout dust whirl was disconnected from the storm over open land. There was no observable damage.

The wider storm

A closed upper low was over Northern California with weak ridging over West Texas. A lingering boundary was mostly south of the Pecos River, and there were easterly upslope winds across the higher terrain which helped to provide lift. There was good moisture across the area as well as wind shear and instability. These conditions contributed to thunderstorms that produced large hail, damaging winds, and a tornado across West Texas.

Began near Haymond (30.1975, -103.1215).
