Between 2:52 PM EST and 3:03 PM EST, the mesonet station near Newport reported a gust to 43 mph, and the station at Rose Island reported a 40 mph gust. At 3:03 PM EST, the Automated Surface Observing System at Newport State Airport reported a wind gust to 40 mph.
Wider weather episode
A pool of cold air above the surface moved over Southern New England during June 30.
This created sufficient instability to cause thunderstorms with strong wind. The cold air moved off to the southeast that night.
