What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

A weak tornado initially touched down near a hospital turning an unoccupied mobile home on its side, peeling off a portion of the roof of a nearby building, and moving several automobiles and breaking out their windows. One fatality occurred when a 51 year old woman was thrown into a vehicle in a parking lot of the hospital. The tornado continued eastward for about a mile producing intermittent damage primarily to trees.

The wider storm

Severe thunderstorms developed across southeast Louisiana in advance of a strong upper level disturbance and an assoicated cold front.

Began near Independence (30.6155, -90.5000).
