Thunderstorm Wind — Highland, Virginia
2019-07-21 · near Mc Dowell, Highland, Virginia
Event narrative
A tree was blown down blocking one lane of Bullpasture River Road near McDowell.
Wider weather episode
An upper level ridge that was in place began to break down during the afternoon hours of July 21st as a cold front moved through the Midwest and an upper-level trough dug into the northern Plains. This allowed additional moisture into the area and when
combined with a weakening capping inversion from height falls it was enough for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop. With substantial instability, some of these thunderstorms became strong to locally severe.
