Event narrative

Due to dense fog, the driver of a car did not see the flashing lights or crossing gates at a railroad crossing in Kernan. He drove through the gate and struck a locomotive. The driver was killed and a passenger was injured. In another accident near Ottawa, three cars were involved, but no injuries were reported.

Dense fog formed across northern Illinois during the morning hours of February 4th and continued into the afternoon. Numerous car accidents were reported with injuries and fatalities.
