The gust was measured at the Ashland Breakwater Lighthouse.

A complex of storms developed the night of the 4th across the Dakotas and pushed across northern Minnesota during the morning hours of the 5th. These storms were exhibiting a downward trend as they moved along the South Shore of Lake Superior, but a few gusts to around 45 mph were observed in the Ashland area ahead of the complex and as the leading edge moved through.
