What the National Weather Service wrote
Intermittent wind damage occurred along the path
from New Tazewell to Tazewell before the tornado began a
continuous path near Hillside Drive. The path ended ENE of Carter
Lane. This tornado either damaged, downed, or completely uprooted
numerous trees. A couple barns and outbuildings were collapsed in
the vicinity of Cedar Fork Road and Carter Lane. In addition,
there was primarily roof damage to multiple structures in its
path.
The wider storm
A strong cold front moved through the Southern Appalachians around mid day impacting much of East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia resulting in widespread wind damage. The air mass in advance of the front was associated with only weak instability. However, the wind field was very strong with favorable directional shear in a small part of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. In this environment, a weak, short lived tornado formed across Northeast Tennessee. Farther south, in Central East Tennessee, straight line winds downed a large tree onto a vehicle resulting in a fatality.
Began near Murphy Mill (36.4700, -83.5600).
