Event narrative

Generally 4 to 6 inches of snow fell across the area in 7 hours. Travel was severely impacted along Interstate 70 with multiple crashes occurring. One crash east of Avon between a semi truck and a pickup truck resulted in one fatality with the interstate closing in the westbound direction for over 8 hours.

Wider weather episode

A strong midlevel Pacific trough and associated cold front progressed across western Colorado. As a result, moderate to heavy snow fell across the mountains as well as some valley locations. Additionally, wind gusts exceeded 55 MPH at times in the mountains with gusts up to 40 MPH in the valleys.
