Event narrative

The Texas Coastal Ocean Observation Network (TCOON) site at Brazos Santiago reported a wind gust of 41 knots during a thunderstorm associated with a feeder band from Tropical Storm Fernand.

Wider weather episode

Embedded thunderstorms in outer bands well north of Tropical Storm Fernand, which made landfall about 35 miles north of La Pesca Mexico, produced numerous gale force gusts over the Lower Texas Gulf waters between early morning of September 3 and early afternoon of September 4. The majority of gusts occurred near and before the time when Fernand's center made landfall (approximately 1035 AM CST, September 4).

In addition to the gale force gusts, sustained winds above 15 knots with frequent gusts to 25 knots helped build seas up to 9 feet offshore, with swell up to 8 second (period) driving water to the base of the dunes at high tide, peaking on September 4.
