An intense winter storm brought heavy snow and strong winds to western and south central South Dakota. Snowfall amounts ranged from 5 to 10 inches across much of far southern South Dakota and the southern Black Hills to 10 to 20 inches across much of the northwest and west central South Dakota plains. Over the northern Black Hills, 15 to 30 inches of snow were recorded. Strong northwest winds over 50 mph produced significant blowing and drifting snow and blizzard conditions on the plains. Many highways were nearly impassible or closed, including Interstate 90.
