The wind gust was measured at the Great Smoky Mountain National Park wind tower on Cove Mountain.

A strong cold front moved into a high shear, but only weakly buoyant atmosphere across the Southern Appalachian region. The strength of the line of showers and isolated thunderstorms weakened as the feature moved off the Cumberland Plateau.
