Event narrative

Observation from avalanche control stated 55mph winds and 2 inches of snow at 6 a.m. Overnight visibility was less than 1/2 mile with very difficult travel conditions.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure system in the Gulf of Alaska pushed a weak trough through Southcentral Alaska. This increased the winds and brought snow showers to the northeastern Prince William Sound, causing blizzard conditions in Thompson Pass.
