A peak wind gust of 62 mph was measured by the automated weather station at the Durango-La Plata County Airport.

Strong surface heating resulted in marginal instability and, when paired with residual monsoonal moisture, isolated thunderstorms developed over the higher terrain. As these cells drifted into the valleys they began to collapse and produce severe thunderstorm wind gusts across portions of southwest Colorado.
