The Palo Duro Canyon floor temperature equaled or exceeded 110 degrees for several hours in the afternoon and reached a maximum temperature of 116 Degrees around 524 pm.
Wider weather episode
A combination of drought conditions, strong high pressure ridging over the area, and southwest down-sloping low level winds led to hot conditions for several days across the Panhandles. Amarillo also reached the second hottest daily maximum temperature ever by hitting 110 degrees on July 13th. Widespread temperatures of 105 to 109 degrees occurred across much the Panhandles, but Palo Duro Canyon reached excessive heat levels in excess of 110 degrees on multiple days during this stretch providing dangerous conditions for hikers in the state park.
