Event narrative
As a strong tropical thunderstorm/shower associated with a mid-level inverted trough and a surplus of tropical moisture moved over the Laguna Madre near the Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge early on September 5th, the Realitos Peninsula TCOON site recorded a gust of 40.8 knots.
Wider weather episode
A 500mb inverted trough moved onshore on September 5th while a large slug of tropical moisture overspread the region. Thunderstorms formed very early the morning of the 5th across the coastal areas and then gradually moved westward through the morning. Some of these thunderstorms produced strong winds that were recorded at some of the buoys as they moved overhead.
