Event narrative

A large, elephant trunk-shaped waterspout was observed by a Monroe County Sheriffs Deputy bayside of Mile Marker 86 of the Overseas Highway, north of Windley Key. A large spray ring was clearly visibile, passing just south of Twisty Mile in Florida Bay. Radar imagery confirmed a supercell thunderstorm structure in the immediate vicinity.

Wider weather episode

A short-lived supercell thunderstorm and associated waterspout developed in Florida Bay while deep layered ridging extended from the Mid Atlantic states to Texas, and an upper low was centered near the Cay Sal Bank in the eastern Straits of Florida.
