Snow levels fell quickly across the North Carolina mountains during the evening in the wake of a strong cold front. Strong northwest winds pushing moisture up the western slopes of the Appalachians resulted in development of numerous to widespread snow showers near the Tennessee border. By midnight on the 1st, accumulations of up 2 inches were reported, with locally higher amounts above 3500 feet. The snow showers continued into the 1st, when heavy snowfall totals were realized during the pre-dawn hours.
