Cold/Wind Chill — Madison, Montana

2021-02-11 · Madison, Montana

Event narrative

Mesonet station mtnor norris hill (mt dot) reports wind chill of -40.

Wider weather episode

Over the week-long period of February 8-15, an arctic air mass settled over North-Central Montana, bringing one of the longest stretches of subzero temperatures in recorded history to the area (8 days at Great Falls, tied for 4th longest stretch). While winds were generally on the light side, they combined with the bitterly cold temperatures, resulting in wind chills below -40F at times. These wind chills prompted Wind Chill Advisories and Wind Chill Warnings across the entire Great Falls County Warning Area. The core of the cold arrived for Wednesday through Friday, with air temperatures dropping to -30 or colder in some areas.
