Winter Storm — Eastern Essex, Massachusetts

2021-02-01 to 2021-02-02 · Eastern Essex, Massachusetts

Event narrative

Snowfall amounts generally ranged from 7 to 14 inches. A coastal front caused a sharp gradient from 5 inches along the immediate coast to 17 inches in Newburyport. Shortly after midnight on the 2nd winds were gusting to 40 to 50 mph. At 424 AM EST a mesonet station at Children's Island measured a gust to 49 mph. At 453 AM EST the ASOS at Beverly Airport (KBVY) reported a gust to 45 mph.

Wider weather episode

A mid level trough over the Appalachians produced a secondary surface low pressure near the mid-Atlantic coast. High pressure over Hudson Bay allowed low level cold air to stay in place initially. Most of the region received 8 to 12 inches of snow, but a coastal front kept accumulations down in southeast and extreme eastern Massachusetts. This storm also produced strong winds and minor coastal flooding.
