Event narrative

Severe(D2) drought remained across the entire zone in January. The Hillsboro Cooperative Observer reported only 0.15 inches of precipitation which was 0.47 inches below normal.

Wider weather episode

Most of southern New Mexico had another month of below normal precipitation in January. All areas except along the border in Luna County, where Exceptional(D4) drought expanded, remained the same as December.
