Event narrative

The month started with the far western portions of the zone in Severe(D2) drought becoming worse to the east where Exceptional(D4) drought was located. On January 19th, the area that was in Severe drought was placed in Extreme(D3) drought while the east remained in Exceptional drought.

Wider weather episode

Most of southern New Mexico had another month of below normal precipitation in January. All areas except along the border in Luna County, where Exceptional(D4) drought expanded, remained the same as December.
