A very strong upper ridge built inland into California during the Memorial Day holiday weekend resulting in temperatures rising to near record levels across the San Joaquin Valley and the West Side Hills by Memorial Day (May 31). Several stations across these areas had maximum temperatures exceed the century mark on May 31 prompting the issuance of Excessive Heat Warnings and the opening of cooling centers due to this event taking place early in the season.
