Event narrative

The Northern Lakes Fire District responded to multiple fires from downed power lines and smoldering slash piles that rekindled with the wind in the Hayden, Rathdrum, and Garwood area. Hundreds of trees were blown down in the Chilco area leading to numerous damaged buildings. There were recorded wind gusts 40-50 mph at numerous nearby RAWS and Mesonet sites.

Wider weather episode

A robust cold front, accompanied by strong north to northeast winds, passed through the northern Idaho Panhandle on April 18th. Evening winds reached gusts in the range of 40-60 mph.
