Event narrative

The eastern half of the zone remained in Exceptional(D4) drought with much of the west still in Extreme(D3) drought. Some improvement was noted over the far southwest where it went into Severe(D2) drought during the month.

Wider weather episode

Very little to no precipitation fell across southern New Mexico in May which kept all areas in Severe(D2) to Exceptional(D4) drought.
